Three Short Films For Mother’s Day: Does Mum Always Know Best?

Mothers are not saints.

We’ll preface this by also saying that doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve our love and respect, or that their sacrifices should be belittled.

They have needs, expectations, personal values. They have faults, they struggle go against their own instincts, and sometimes the ends sometimes justify the means, no matter what society says.

Here’s some food for thought, acknowledging that being human is a big part of who they are, and that we should allow them to be human.

Here are our top Viddsee films on motherhood you loved.

#1 – DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO – A MOTHER FORCES HER TEENAGE DAUGHTER INTO ABORTION

My White Balloon ss3 krk

A single mother forces her daughter into an abortion. In her own experience, motherhood ruined her youth, her career.

It’s an intense battle of wills, tears, resentment and accusations. It’s an unfair world. They rage on about the life denied, their lives denied, and the grief of their circumstances.

In the end, it brought them closer together.

Vaishnav_SS3 KRK

This mom choses between giving up a common thief hiding in her house and her son’s life.

Her natural instinct and responsibility was to protect her family. It is not unnatural to also want to uphold her values as an individual, her personal beliefs.

In these circumstances, she paid the price for her values. Only she has to live with what she chose. Maybe it was worth it.

#3 MAKING DECISIONS FOR A SON WHO DOESN’T KNOW BETTER

Mother Never Cries ss2 krk

Maybe, just maybe mothers don’t know best.

Out of sheer desperation, a mum gambled with her son’s innocence and locked him up with a strange woman. She cornered him into having sex to ensure that he continues the family line.

They have an intimate, strange and unconventional relationship, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want the best for him. But just maybe what’s best for him wasn’t really what he understood or wanted for himself.
