[WATCH] Yasmin Ahmad’s last film, made in 2009, is still relevant today

Yasmin Ahmad, the darling of Malaysian cinema, passed away in 2009.

Chocolate is her last film, and was released posthumously. On the surface, it’s simple tale about a young girl who is unable to afford chocolate. But it is also a layered parable on the racial relations in Malaysia, and as relevant today as it was 5 years ago.

Watch ‘Chocolate’ by Yasmin Ahmad:

A quiet tale that reminds us that, despite the multifaceted contradiction of Malaysia, life goes on – even if not all of it is sweet.

‘Chocolate’ was part of the 15 Malaysia short film project commemorating Malaysia’s independence in 2009.

Yasmin was well-loved and well-known for her stories about Malaysia, especially through commemorative and festive advertisements and her feature films on multi-racial, multi-cultural Malaysia.

She was honoured this year on the Internets with a special Google doodle.
