Joan’s coming out was entirely by accident. A photograph of her and her girlfriend was discovered by her mother, who immediately confronted her.
It was shocking to think that her daughter could be a lesbian, and a sense of injustice and ungratefulness that Joan had disgraced the family.
It led to an impasse, a bitter exchange of words, and the truth about their expectations about each other set against the expectations of society.
But just as she felt dejected and emotionally drained at the realisation, her mother comforted her, as only a mother knew how to.
It resolved the turmoil at the moment, but it was Joan’s bittersweet coming out that gave them a newfound understanding of each other, and a journey to acceptance.
