They were evicted the night before Idul Fitri, thrown out unceremoniously with their belongings by the street.
Dad was prepared, but his son Azlan wasn’t. Azlan was too young to understand. What he understood was a dark place of despair, an alien and cold world where he was robbed of everything he knew — home.
Where one would despair, Dad found a shopping cart with squeaky wheels and hoisted his son on it. It was a thrilling ride, a temporary distraction, and maybe a way to exhaust the little one’s anxiety.
It put a smile on his son’s face.
Decades on, on a similar cold night, they still shared this sweet memory together.
