The schoolyard is where we first develop ideas about country and nationhood. The national anthem is likely one of the earliest songs in our childhood memory, no matter where you live.

We all know our national anthems, but do we know what it means?

Here’s a six minute documentary about Singapore’s national anthem, which is in the Malay language.

Very simply: it’s a montage of young Singaporeans responding to the first two lines of ‘Majulah Singapore’:

“Mari kita rakyat Singapura,
Sama-sama menuju bahagia.”

They speak very candidly about their own interpretation of its sentiment. The words are not unfamiliar to them, but yet they grapple with its meaning.
