Mohan is an Animal Rescue Officer with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). His shift begins at 10pm; it’s a one-man-show. It can be challenging as some rescues require more people.
He was a former commando until he had a bad accident which left him with a limp. “Whenever I see an injured animal I always tell myself ‘This was what I went through.’”
No case is the same. Sometimes kitten food is just the trick to bait a skittish cat on a ledge.
At other times, a catch pole is needed to rescue a lost cat on the ledge of the 12th floor.
Tonight, he cares for a newborn kitten sent to the SPCA.
The animals love Mohan, just as much as he loves them. When an animal is in trouble late at night, he is the hero who shows up.
‘Buy & Throw Away’ is the first episode of the While You Sleep social documentary series, featuring Singaporeans who work the graveyard shift. The five-episode series will also profile the extraordinary jobs of a suicide hotline volunteer, an ambulance driver, an A&E medical staff and an embalmer.
While You Sleep is part of the Viddsee Voices project to develop original films that explore with local content creators issues commonly overlooked in our society.
